World stock markets plunge as global recession fears grows.Stocks plummeted across the world on Monday amid fears of a global recession, with markets in Europe suffering their biggest one-day losses since the September 11th attacks on the United States.
lack of buying interest -- people are battening down the hatches while they see what happens in the US.
A credit squeeze prompted by a crisis in the US subprime, or high-risk, mortgage sector has given way to a wider malaise in the world's biggest economy, with unemployment rising and the dollar falling.
Many analysts now fear that the US slowdown could damage the world economy.World oil prices slid on deepening worries about a potential drop in energy demand owing to the weakness of the US economy, analysts said. New York's main contract, light sweet crude, shed 1.76 dollars to 88.81 dollars per barrel.
It looks like the US is heading for a recession or may be already in recession, looking at the data.
The US economy has been hit hard by rising defaults in the "subprime" mortgage sector, in which Americans with bad credit records are struggling to pay back housing loans given to them during the housing boom.
And Bush's plans doesn't help, it came too late , and made little impact.
Gene therapy shows promise for treating chronic painAn experimental gene therapy treatment for chronic pain enabled rats with this condition to go
symptom-free for three months.Researchers are hopeful that the therapy could potentially be used to treat people with severe or chronic pain sparing them some of the debilitating side effects of the opiod drugs currently on the market which act systemically, rather than locally.
Targeted gene therapy will likely avoid the unwanted side effects associated with opiod painkillers such as morphine.
Singapore and Moscow in final showdown to host Youth Olympic GamesIt is Singapore versus Moscow in the race to host the world’s first Youth Olympic Games in 2010.
The citizen support for any Olympic Games is very critical. To host the Olympics, they want it to be successful. That’s why every single individual, every man in the street, their show of support is important," said Teo Ser Luck, adviser to Singapore’s 2010 Youth Olympic Games Bid Committee and Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth and Sports.
The host city will be announced on 21 February.
Singapore has planned to pump in more than US$75 million into organising the Youth Olympic Games.
We offer the International Olympic Committee (IOC) the opportunity to create a new legacy, by showing how a small city—state can also be part of the exciting Olympic movement. We look forward to the upcoming postal vote, and we hope that our bid will merit the support of IOC members around the world.
We are also well known for our efficiency and our ability to organise big events, given short lead time," he added. "Hence, the IOC can be assured that the first Youth Olympic Games, if held in Singapore, will be an event the world will be proud of. It will be a celebration of the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
More help could be on the way for the needy to cope with rising living costSingapore’s inflation rate hit a 25—year high of 4.2% in November, and this is expected to go higher this year, sparking worries of how needy Singaporeans will cope.
The finance minister said that one reason for the rising cost is the increase in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 5 to 7 percent last July.
The GST change has caused only a one—off increase in prices and not a continuing price rise. However, this has been more than offset by the assistance package that the government provided to Singaporeans. Lower—
income families have received offsets which are several times larger than the increase in their GST payouts.
However, Mr Tharman said the GST hike is not the main cause for the rising cost of living but rather the
climbing oil and food prices globally.Medical inflation rate was 6.2 per cent in the past year, outstripping the national inflation rate.
lower—income families receive more help through the Additional CPF Housing Grant introduced in 2006.
This means that families can service their housing loan entirely with funds from their CPF Ordinary Account, without any need for cash outlay.
HDB resale prices rose by some 17.4 percent in the last quarter last year, the highest increase in 10 years.
Genting International to build hotel at new Singapore Sports HubA new hotel will be built at the new National Stadium and Sports Hub in Kallang. The four—star hotel will have about 500 rooms and will occupy 30,000 square metres.
Dragages Singapore, which is the construction firm for the winning consortium —the Singapore Sports Hub, said that at least three groups expressed interest in building the new hotel, which will cost S$200 million to develop.
Genting will build and run the new hotel for 25 years.
The head of the consortium said the hotel’s construction will begin in the middle of 2008. The hotel’s plot is near the two multi—purpose halls, the future MRT station and the main entrance road.
The new hub is expected to generate at least S$10 million a year in commercial revenue, as a start.
Up to 75 per cent of the money will be used to fund activities and facilities at the hub.
The revenue is also linked to the expenditure. If the market is good, we will invest more money into the project to have more events and more facilities, to have more return.
